What is Tahoe Wilderness Medicine?

Tahoe Wilderness Medicine provides wilderness medical education to health care professionals, expedition leaders and outdoor enthusiasts. We combine outdoor skills and adventure with wilderness medicine education with most courses including continuing medical education (CME) credits for medical professionals.  Our courses are designed and taught by a faculty of medical professionals, mountain guides, river guides, avalanche educators, and technical rescue experts.  The combination of the faculty’s training and experience provides real-world, comprehensive wilderness medicine education for our clients.

    The Western States Health and Athletics Annual Conference in Auburn, CA will provide participants with education to safely run and race ultramarathons.  Additionally, participants will gain insight for planning and conducting ultramarathon races, as well as potential effects of ultrarunning on long term health based on existing evidence and expert opinion from leaders in this field. Attendees will actively participate in didactics, panel discussion and hands-on training to evaluate and treat many common medical concerns that occur during ultramarathons. They will gain an understanding of the overall preparation and planning needed to safely produce an ultramarathon that often combines some of the challenges of wilderness and remote medicine with the unique concerns of endurance event medicine. Furthermore, they will understand some of the cutting edge research in this field.

    Chamonix is the global hub of trail and mountain running and provides the ideal base for our summer wilderness medical education course.  We have partnered with Run the Alps to offer this unique course that will please running enthusiasts of all abilities. Each day will have shorter as well as more strenuous options available, along with instruction on trail running topics such as descending confidently and efficiently. In addition to our regular CME package, we will also have time with PGMH, the renowned helicopter rescue service based in Chamonix and other running specific topics.

  • This course combines Alpine Skills International Introduction to Backcountry skiing course with a carefully crafted continuing medical education (CME) curriculum. The didactic and field sections of the CME course were designed to provide medical professional the knowledge and skills apply their medical expertise in the winter wilderness environment. The course focuses on core winter wilderness topics, common ski and snowboard injuries, avalanche rescue, and patient evacuation strategies.

  • This course is set in the Japanese Alps near Hokkaido, Japan. Join us and learn how to manage medical emergencies in the mountains during the winter. Not only will we offer a great education, but you will also get to enjoy skiing the legendary deep snows of Japan through old growth Japanese birch and colored maple trees, followed by evenings filled with great camaraderie and Japanese food and culture.

  • Tahoe Wilderness Medicine is excited to offer a week of sport climbing in Spain in conjunction with our Summer Wilderness Medicine Curriculum.   The retreat is based in the beautiful Montsec Mountains of Northwest Catalunya on the edge of the Pyrenees.  We will foster personal and professional development with daily sport climbing, daily breath work and yoga practice, as well as continuing education.

  • Mountain peaks with incredible vistas of the Arctic Ocean and Norway fjords are just the beginning of what you’ll find in the Lofoten Islands.  March is powder season in Lofoten so be ready to explore couloirs and peaks and the thrill of awesome descents!  Enjoy 6 days of guided backcountry skiing with certified mountain guides. Tahoe Wilderness Medicine, LLC has partnered with Northern Alpine Guides and Lofoten Ski Lodge to offer this weeklong Winter Wilderness Medicine course in the Lofoten Islands of Norway.

  • Enjoy 5 days of spectacular Grand Canyon views, flowing singletrack, and luxurious camping. A full support team will haul our gear, do our cooking, set up our safari-style camp village, and provide mechanical support while we enjoy some of the best trails in the West. The climbs are gentle and the descents are smooth and flowing. This trip is the perfect way for mountain bikers to see one of America’s most spectacular National Parks away from the crowds!

  • Telluride to Moab is a spectacular scenic adventure with tons of optional singletrack, including Moab's famous Porcupine Rim Trail on the last day. What a way to end a trip! Traveling between fully stocked huts, you'll carry little more than you would for a day ride. This 7 day, 6 night ride will start in Telluride, CO among the San Juan mountains, crosses the wooded Uncompahgre Plateau, and ends in the dramatic canyon lands of Maob, UT.     Dry Tortugas/Garden Key offers a chance for a serene retreat. After arriving by ferry and taking a guided tour of historic Fort Jefferson, we will spend time learning with ample breaks in between instructional sessions for your own activites. The Garden Key holds great swimming and snorkelling above many historic shipwrecks, as well as other activities. This is a trip for the true nature lover. There are no accommodations on the island, so we will be camping and preparing simple but delicious cooperative meals.

  • High Sierra Snowcat and Yurt and Tahoe Wilderness Medicine, LLC offer a unique guided experience for backcountry skiing and riding and Continued Medical Education in the legendary Eastern Sierra. The Yurts are situated in the backcountry for prime access to great skiing and riding. To get to the Yurts, we shuttle our guests and their gear with our snowcat. Guiding, food, and yurt lodging is all provided. They have graced the Giro more than 40 times and famous Italian cyclists such as Bartali, Coppi and Alfredo Binda carved out their reputations here. This trip takes you on an intensive week of riding through the Dolomites and includes the chance to ride the roads of the Sella Ronda, one of the most beautiful cycling loops in the world.   • This course is set out of Revelstoke, B.C. with Canadian Mountain Holiday Heliskiing, CMH. Join us and learn how to manage medical emergencies in the mountains during the winter. Not only will we offer a great education, but you will also be able to enjoy skiing the legendary light snow of the Selkirk and Monashee Mountain Ranges via helicopter transportation. We provide an unmatched, multi-disciplinary approach to winter wilderness medicine and mountain rescue with a focus on companion rescue and improvised rescue skills.
